Personal injury insurance should definitely be one of the first types of cover you consider. While you are not required by law to obtain it, there are a number of circumstances under which it could prove invaluable to you. Courtesy of the specialists at Prosperity Law, read on to discover a little more about personal injury policies and the circumstances under which you may need one.

What is Personal Injury Insurance?

Many car insurance policies come with an optional or integrated personal injury insurance policy, but in truth, this type of cover can be much more far-reaching. It comes into effect not only if you are injured in a traffic accident, but also if you are injured at work, as a result of violence or after a slip or trip.

What Can be Covered by Personal Injury Insurance?

Many issues come under the umbrella of personal injury. Depending on the policy you have negotiated, you could claim for anything from minor injuries to the loss – of loss of use of – limbs, becoming permanently totally or partially disabled or even being killed in or as a result of the incident for which the claim is made. If injury is self inflicted, you will not be covered as a policy will only come into effect as a result of accidental circumstances. Sickness will not be covered either. It is important to check the extent of your chosen cover with your insurance broker and ensure that you’ve added any necessary cover surplus to render your policy perfect for your requirements. Remember, what you are paid depends on the severity of your injury.

Do I Need Personal Injury Insurance?

Whether or not you acquire this type of insurance is completely up to you, as there is no mandatory requirement for it. In the workplace, your employer should have a policy in place to compensate you if are injured in an accident for which they are liable. Businesses are obligated by law to have workers’ compensation in place. However, should an accident occur for which your employer is not required to pay out compensation, you will not receive a payout unless you claim on your own personal injury policy. Sole traders and freelancers are not often covered by any insurance other than their own, so it’s is highly advisable that this type of worker invests in personal injury insurance as a matter of great importance, as the amount you gain from it should an accident leave you unable to work will help to make up the wages you will miss out on as a result of your injury. Drivers are also highly encouraged to obtain personal injury cover alongside their other vehicular insurances. Anyone between the ages of 18 – 69 can acquire a personal injury policy, and this particular type of cover is one that is extremely valuable to anyone who is eligible for it. While the more active you are and the more dangerous your work or occupation could be considered, the more likely it is for you to require personal injury insurance, accidents can happen at any time and to anyone, and their results can be life-changing both physically and financially.

How Do I Get Hold of Personal Injury Insurance?

Many good insurance brokers offer personal injury policies. No two are the same, so it is important to take time over your search and discuss each option thoroughly. Explaining your occupation and any other relevant details with your insurer in depth may prove extremely helpful when it comes to discerning exactly what kind of cover you need and whether or not you might require any additional elements in your policy.
