Cerebral palsy is a lifelong neurological condition that affects children in different ways including muscle tone and movement. It typically occurs from childbirth and becomes more prominent as the child gets older. Children with cerebral palsy need specialist support as early as possible. It can occur as a result of negligent treatment and making a legal claim for clinical negligence can help to obtain the treatment and support they need. In this article, we will look at what cerebral palsy is, what can cause it and how Prosperity Law can help you.

What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disability that affects the movement of body and muscle depending on which area of the brain has been affected. There are three types of cerebral palsy which are spasticity, dyskinetic and ataxic. Some children can have a combination of these types. Cerebral palsy affects children in different ways including muscle tone, movement, posture, balance, coordination, epilepsy, behaviour and difficulty communicating and feeding.

What Can Cause Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy can be difficult to spot during the early stages but some of the main causes include a bleed on the brain, premature birth or abnormal development.

However, cerebral palsy can also be caused by Clinical negligence, sometimes referred to as medical negligence. Clinical negligence is when treatment received by a health professional has caused an injury or condition or made it worse, and in this instance the most common is birth injury. This can be due to a number of reasons including a lack of maternal healthcare during the pregnancy, failing to monitor foetal development, a delay in delivery causing oxygen deprivation, or failing to diagnose or treat conditions such as infection, jaundice or meningitis after birth.

Prosperity Law Can Help You Make A Claim

If you believe that your child has cerebral palsy due to clinical negligence, then you can make a claim on their behalf against health professionals, regardless of whether the treatment was provided by the NHS or private care. We can obtain compensation and financial support to obtain the care your child needs as early as possible, to help them get the best outcome.
